Gutters
Gutter systems are designed to catch water run-off from roofs and drain it to downspouts that lead it away from foundations and walls. Roofing material such as asphalt and gravel also falls onto gutter systems. Dirt and debris build up within gutter systems eventually blocking drainage pipes. Clogged gutter systems can cause damage to homes’ exterior surfaces including wood, brick, stucco, tile, shingle and fiber cement.
Clogged gutters can cause:
- Basement flooding
- Foundation cracking and settlement
- Soil erosion
- Dry rot on fascia boards, siding, and roofs
- Paint damages
- Windows, doors and siders damage
The importance of keeping gutter systems clean
No matter what kind of gutter you have, they all require upkeep. Ideally, they should be cleaned two times per year (spring/fall). Depending on weather conditions and environment, additional cleaning might be needed.
In particular, if you also have a low sloping roof, even a leaf guard won’t protect your roof from getting dirty, so whether you have a leaf guard or not, roofing upkeep is required.
